I've gotten mixed feelings witnessing all this violence and harshness happening to all these innocent people. Buddha Collapsed Out of Shame is set in Bamiyan,a small historic town in Afghanistan ravaged by Taliban's bloody rule. The main character,Bakhtay's dream was trying to go to a recently opened girls' school across the river. She wants this so much because she wants to learn funny stories after seeing her neighbour living in the next door cave reading a book.Abbas tells funny stories that made Baktay fascinated.
Unfortunately, she faced many obstacles in fulfilling her desire. One of them are she doesn't have a notebook, pen or any clue on where the nearest school is.She was also given the responsibility to take care of her brother while her mom's away.Bakhtay couldn't find for her mom to ask for money so she sold eggs in the market to raise money for the notebook. She took her mother's lipstick as a writing tool.Abbas and Bakthay went to school together but the teacher told her to go to specialized girls schools at the other side of the river. On the her journey, she met with a group of children who were playing a game in which they're Taliban fighting Americans. They terrorise Bakhtay, seize her irreligious lipstick, put a paper bag over her head, tear pages from her book and pretend to bury her alive. Its by far the most terrifying scenes in the movie. Not forgetting, the boys also capture infidel girls with pretty eyes and school books.
Some images and symbols used in this film are the purity of the child and her struggles which illustrates the very core of the Afghanistan's problems and challenges.Other than that, the way how women are treated in this movie also reflects on their existence among the Afghanistan people.Like for example,if they apply lipstick, they risk being punished brutally, stoned to death and having given water to drink before they die.Women are also forced to wear burkha to cover their hair and weren't allowed to attend school. This actually portrays prejudice and bias against women.I as a women feel that there's injustice towards women. There's a symbol of destruction in this movie.Precious historical and cultural relics including the dynamiting of 2 priceless Buddha statues each over 100 feet tall that were carved into the Bamiyan cliffs were destroyed. The statues served as a backdrop of the cliff happens to be the most climatic and violent scenes of the film.

This movie has a wide variety of themes. One of them is bias and prejudice against women.Women are pictures as 2nd class citizens. The Afghan women have to die to liberate themselves. This movie describe the life under the Taliban regime.Through the eyes of the Bakhtay, viewers get to see how the civil society especially the young ,the brain washed are manipulated by the customs and rituals but not human themselves.
Secondly, violence towards children was also obvious in this movie. This movie pictures the effects of the recent years' violence on the country Afghanistan. The behavior of adults affect the younger generation because children are the future adults. If they get used to violence, the future of the world will be in great danger. There were mainly 3 types of community like the Russian,Taliban and the Americans. They all had one thing in common that was 'VIOLENCE'.Viewers can get a full understanding o the level of torture and violence under the Taliban regime.
One thing that amazed me was the perseverance in Bakhtay in dealing with struggles in life. She keeps finding life and hope.Like for example, she keeps running out of the circle that was drew by the Taliban children. She never gives up except when she was forced to play war by the other children and should play dead by lying on the ground after Abbas shouted "Die,and you will be free".This shows that there isn't any room for individalism, freedom and human integrity under the Taliban regime. To them, the only way to be free in life is to DIE.
In conclusion, the story was well told.It serves as a reminder to appreciate whatever that we're lucky to have like peace and war.We are absolutely fortunate that our country does not suffer from such chaotic war comparing to Afghanistan.
